Rebranded
The institute is rebranded to Institute for Green Finance & Law
Justification for Name Change:
Changing the name from "Institute for Climate Finance & Law" to "Institute for Green Finance & Law" broadens the institute’s scope beyond climate-specific issues to include a wider range of environmental and sustainability-linked financial topics—such as biodiversity finance, pollution control, and sustainable land use. The term "green finance" is more inclusive, aligning with evolving global standards (e.g., EU, Chinese, and related taxonomies in Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere) and reflecting the institute’s commitment to comprehensive environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration in finance and law.
2020
Founded
Advocates4Earth works on setting up an independent research arm to be known as the Institute for Climate Finance and Law. The rationale was as follows:
RATIONALE
By 2020, the actual climate finance mobilized was estimated at around $83.3 billion, according to the OECD.
The shortfall damaged trust between the Global North and South.
It weakened negotiating positions at COP meetings — especially around loss and damage, adaptation funding, and carbon markets.
It also raises legal and ethical questions about accountability, especially since the pledge is embedded in a binding treaty (Paris Agreement).
2019
Advocates4Earth
Advocates4Earth is found on 22nd January 2019, as a non-profit, public interest environmental law, climate and wildlife justice organisation
2015
Paris Agreement
Article 9: Climate Finance Commitments
Legally obligates developed countries to provide financial resources to assist developing countries with mitigation and adaptation.
Introduces the concept of “climate finance flows” being consistent with a pathway toward low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development (Art. 2.1(c)).
Paves the way for the $100 billion per year goal by 2020, agreed originally in Copenhagen (2009), but made more binding and visible through Paris.
